About Me

I want people to take a closer look at ourselves

Disconcerted by an Asia that is quickly forsaking its traditions for a modernity that leaves more people on the lower side of equal, she finds herself compelled to photograph the everyday lives of ordinary people.

Using a story-telling format, the photographer looks into a human psyche that is caught between split-seconds of emotional revelations and the harsh truths of reality.

Her photographs seek to be straight-forward and informative, using an aesthetic that is at times confrontational.

Mindy’s training began as a daily newspaper journalist in Singapore. Apart from breaking news, she reported on migrant labour, underprivileged communities and the blue-collared working class. She won a Society of Publishers Asia (SOPA) award for excellence in Human Rights Reporting in 2007. Her transition to using the camera as her preferred medium for story-telling began in 2008, when she decided to go solo.

The genres of her work today extend from street photography to contemporary affairs, weddings and sports.

She has photographed for Thomson Reuters, covered the Beijing Paralympics, and commissioned to produce text and photographic reports in cities like Seoul, Mumbai, Jakarta and Shanghai.

Last year, she produced a series of photographs in North Korea which went viral on social media, and subsequently exhibited in France, in the Festival Pil’ours.

Currently, her work about Lee Kuan Yew’s state funeral and Singapore’s mourning are on display at the National Museum of Singapore. She also co-published a photography book ‘Silenced Minority’, about her country’s electoral campaign.
